The structure of PRINCE2

The following section is covered during the PRINCE2 Practitioner course.

The structure of the PRINCE2 framework is composed of four integrated elements. These are: principles, themes, processes and the project environment.

PRINCE2 principles
These are the underlying rules and good practices upon which everything else in PRINCE2 is based. They determine whether the project is being managed using PRINCE2. There are seven principles in PRINCE2. If you apply all the seven PRINCE2 principles, you are in fact managing your project according to PRINCE2.

PRINCE2 themes
The PRINCE2 themes describe aspects of project management that must be continuously addressed
throughout the project. There are seven themes in PRINCE2 and they explain the specific ways required by PRINCE2 for various project management disciplines. The themes also explain why they are necessary on projects.

PRINCE2 processes
There are seven processes in PRINCE2 and they describe the steps that must be performed throughout the project lifecycle. The processes cover all the activities to be performed starting with some pre-project activities, initiating  the project, managing the project day by day, and closing down the project. Each process provides a list of activities, products and responsibilities to be performed by the various members of the project management team.

Tailoring PRINCE2 to the project environment
PRINCE2 must be tailored to the specific environment in which the project is operating. PRINCE2 is not a framework that can be applied without tailoring to all projects. All projects are unique and come in different shapes and sizes. Therefore, the sign of a good project manager is how they adapt the themes and processes and apply the principles to meet the needs of their particular project.
