PRINCE2 projects
During my PRINCE2 training, the first morning is spent discussing some of the basic concepts of PRINCE2. One topic we discuss is the difference between projects and 'business as usual' i.e. the everyday actitivities that occur in every organization. These activities involve the day to day work of the staff who work in sales, marketing, customer services, IT, facilities, operations etc. Yet people who work on projects do not perform these every day activities. So what are the key differences between projects and 'business as usual'?
Since we live in an increasingly competitive world, organizations need to adapt to survive. Businesses that do not adapt, will fail. Projects are therefore the mechanism by which organizations introduce change into their everyday activities. For example, a company may set up a project to roll out new sales software to all of its sales staff. After installing it and training the users, the project comes to the end, and those staff then start using the software and by doing so, deliver benefits to their organization in the form of more efficient working practices, so saving the company money. The new software and the working practices performed to use it then becomes part of 'business as usual' activities.
Our PRINCE2 training course and my next blog post will discuss this and other key differences between projects and 'business as usual'.
