Project Management Professional Certification

If you are a project manager who needs to upgrade your resume with professional certification, then what options are open to you? This article looks at the different avenues open to people wishing to gain project management certification.

In summary, in the
UK and Europe, the most popular project management certification is PRINCE2. PRINCE2 means PRojects IN Controlled Environments and is Crown Copyrighted. AXELOS manages the method and accredits PRINCE2 training organisations and trainers.

In the
UK, there is a less popular but more recent method which is supported by the UK government and is managed by the Association for Project Management in the UK. In the USA, qualifications from the Project Management Institute (PMI®) are more popular.

In the UK today, many project management jobs require PRINCE2 or APM certification.

There are two levels of PRINCE2 certification:

The Foundation examination consists of a 1-hour multiple choice exam and approximately 97% of candidates pass this exam.

The Practitioner level is an open book 2.5 hour exam meaning that candidates can use their PRINCE2 manuals during the exam. Practitioner candidates must have passed the Foundation exam prior to sitting the Practitioner exam.

These courses can be taken together as a combined PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course.

Existing project managers or people wanting to move into project management should consider taking the Practitioner and Foundation exams. Project administrators, team leaders and support staff might consider taking the Foundation exam.
